All Deviations

Darkness swirled around her as she walked calmly through it, usually she would be scared of the dark but there was something comforting about this darkness.  As she walked several strange figures appeared in front of her all of them just shadows with frightening glowing eyes.  However, they there was a wall that separated her and the creatures.  Somehow she could feel their loneliness, the desire to belong, something she knew all too well.  A hole suddenly opened in the wall allowing her to walk through it to the creatures.  She approached the hole tentatively and put her hands on it ready to pull herself through…

Kendra jolted awake at the sound of her obnoxious alarm clock going off.  She smacked the snooze button and slowly began to sit up in her bed.  Rubbing her eyes she glanced at the clock: 6:00am.

“Time to get ready for school...” She sighed pulling back her blankets.

Flipping the light switch near her small bed Kendra let her forest green eyes scan her small room.  The room was almost half the size of a normal room, so she only had room for her small bed with plain white sheets, a dresser, and a little desk with a lamp for homework.  She opened her door and stepped out into the dreary hallway that belonged to her city’s only orphanage and down to the bathroom.

Kendra was a thirteen year old orphan girl with dark blond hair that reached just above her back.   She had a pale complexion, and liked to wear dark colors.  Kendra had spent almost all of her life at the orphanage, she didn’t know all the details but as far as she knew her mother had only been sixteen when she was born.  Apparently her mother had been in love with a boy from her school and decided to take their relationship “to the next level”.  Her mother thought she was safe from pregnancy, but she was wrong, and when Kendra came, her father dumped her mother, and then soon after her mother dumped her.

“What is with that weird dream?” the girl murmured to herself as she prepared some toast for her breakfast.

It was completely quiet, since she was the only child anywhere around her age no one else had to get up so early for school.  Even the caretakers refused to wake up until at least seven.  Kendra’s chosen wardrobe for the day was her school uniform, which she hated; it was a soft pink blouse with a skirt of the same color.  Most people would tell her the outfit looked good on her since the color looked good with her hair.  Kendra was quite estranged from the rest of her peers, most of them kept their distance from her just because she still lived in an orphanage, though she really didn’t try to make any friends either.  Of course there was one person that still hung around Kendra, no matter how much she had tried to ignore him in the past.  His name was Blaine, although he looked quite intimidating with his short black hair with dark blue streaks, dark brown eyes, and pierced left ear, he was really a very good and gentle natured person.

As Kendra walked out of the Orphanage and down the street, a door to a nearby house opened and out stepped Blaine.

“Hey!” He called as Kendra just rolled her eyes and continued walking. “Aww come on Kendra, you’re so mean!” Blaine wined as he ran to catch up to her.

“If you can’t come out on time then don’t bother trying to walk with me every morning.” She chided good naturedly.  After realizing that he wouldn’t leave her alone Kendra began to except Blaine as her first friend.

“So did you reach past the hole last night?” He asked in a more serious voice.

“No.” she sighed, it was nice to be able to talk to someone about her dreams.  The same dream had been reoccurring for the past week, and each time she got closer and closer to the hole.  “I was just about to go through it before my alarm clock went off.”

“Bummer.  But then again maybe tonight you could actually get through, since you get closer every time.”

“Yeah maybe your right.”  Kendra smiled at her friend.  “And then I can wake up and finally tell you what was on the other side.”

Blaine pumped his fist into the air “Yeah!  You’ve got me so darn curious.”  He picked at the red dress shirt that was part of the boy’s uniform “Man now if only they would let us wear something other than these stupid uniforms.”

Kendra laughed “Agreed.”

After school Kendra decided to go to Blaine’s house, she wanted to keep him company since his mother was off on a business trip and his father wouldn’t be home until late.  She changed into her spare clothes she kept at his house, which consisted of a dark blue shirt and jeans; Blaine threw on a pair of baggy black pants and one of his plain black t-shirts.  They hung out and talked for a while, mostly about Kendra’s strange dream.  Before long the two found some food (cooked curtesy of Blaine) and settled down for some video games.

“I’m as so gonna win!” Blaine cheered.

Kendra shoved him “No way I’m going to kick your sorry butt!”

Finally it became time for Kendra to head back to the Orphanage, she wished she could have spent the night with Blaine but the orphanage expressly forbid it on school nights.  So it was with apprehension that Kendra got in bed, ready to dream once more.

Once again she was walking through the darkness as it swirled almost soothingly around her feet.  She stood and stared at the wall and the creatures that stood behind it, for a moment she thought the hole wasn’t going to open tonight, when suddenly it did.  Before she knew what she was doing Kendra was running towards the hole, she was determined to reach the other side tonight.  Just as before she reached the hole and placed her hands on the sides to lift herself through.  But unlike before a large paw like hand reached through and offered it to Kendra to help her through.  She took it and was pulled through, however, before she could get her bearings Kendra blacked out.

Kendra began to stir as light hit her eyes.  “Well that was disappointing.” She murmured.  It was then that she realized she was not in her bed; in fact she was lying on the ground in what looked like the middle of a forest.  Kendra picked herself up and walked around in a small circle.

“What in the heck happened?” she said to herself.  Of course she wasn’t expecting a deep female voice to answer her, especially not from the back of her head.

“I brought you here.” it said simply.

“Where’s here, who are you, and why?” Kendra asked aloud, feeling like an idiot.
